You made some excellent observations on reasons the book didn't work for you - now I want to find it and read it as well. <br /><br />As a writer of three Austen-inspired books myself, I can say that it isn't easy to tackle a re-imagining of one of Jane's beloved novels. It's impossible to improve on her works, so I admire anyone - be it Curtis Sittenfeld or Katie Heaney - who tackles the job and tries to make something new and fresh out of it. <br /><br />In my own Emma-inspired book, The Trouble With Emma, I stayed fairly true to the original story but updated it to include a South Devon coastal setting, a gay baker named Boz, and a reality show called !ind Your Manors. It was great fun to write. I agree that the character of Emma's father is important to the story, as he illustrates her kind heart and good (if misguided) intentions. <br /><br />Thank you for posting this review...I look forward to reading the book.
